youngpoetrecitingherw_mlgwAt the age of seven, Bridget Nyambura, has already started the journey to become a superstar using her attractive poem presentation.

The Standard Three pupil at Githunguri Township Primary School in Kiambu has carved a niche in poem writing and reciting, often leaving her audiences speechless.

Her composure when reciting the poems in front of large crowds is breathtaking, and attracts children and adults alike.

Nyambura has appeared on local television stations when performing in large political rallies, and she says she is always happy to be recognised for her performances.

"I have recited poems for many national leaders, my first time having been three years when I recited a poem for Mrs Charity Ngilu during a hospital opening ceremony at Muguta Village," says the little girl.

Nyambura, who aspires to be a pilot when she grows up, has also performed for prominent politicians who visit the Kiambu region and recently travelled to Murang'a to perform for the Prime minister during his tour of Kigumo.

In 2006, Nyambura performed for First Lady Lucy Kibaki during a fundraising ceremony at Kambui PCEA church in Githunguri District.

"I recited a poem for the First Lady and she hugged me," the young poet told the Nation.

She has also done recitations for former vice president Moody Awori, then minister for Education Noah Wekesa, and former minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Ms Martha Karua.Comes naturally

Nyambura says composing and reciting comes naturally to her.

"I started learning about poems at the age of two. I started by memorising Bible verses, which I continue to do," she says.

The little girl has taken her school to the national festivals and won numerous awards.

But despite her numerous performances, Nyambura still manages to maintain a remarkable academic record.

Her trainer, Ms Rose Wanjiru, says that since Standard One, the girl has always been at the top of her class, with not less than 490 marks out of the possible 500.

Talk of town

"She maintains very good grades even as she does her school proud in the festivals," says Ms Wanjiru.

In her home area, Nyambura has become the talk of the town, with many people wanting her to recite her poems for them.

"She gets invitations from the churches and even the district commissioner to perform during public holidays," says the trainer.

Nyambura is the brain behind her compositions, with her mother only helping her out in putting the ideas to paper and with the final touches.

During political functions she has performed "Wakenya kwa nini", a poem that calls for peace.

She says she was inspired to write the poem after the post election violence in 2007/2008.
